Protecting Youth Through Action
Empower actively engages in policy and advocacy to create safer communities and reduce youth substance use. Our efforts focus on passing ordinances, educating decision-makers, and empowering youth voices at the local and state levels.
Social Host Ordinance
Empower played a key role in passing the Social Host Ordinance in Martin County. This law holds individuals criminally responsible for knowingly allowing underage drinking on their property, even if they did not provide the alcohol. Research shows that when adults provide alcohol to teens, it increases the risk of drug use, risky behaviors, and health problems. This ordinance helps prevent these dangers by holding social hosts accountable.
Advocacy at the Capitol
Each year, Empower takes students to the MN State Capitol for advocacy training and meetings with legislators. These experiences help youth develop leadership skills and make their voices heard on policies that impact their generation.
Cannabis Policy Support
As Minnesota’s cannabis laws evolve, we assist cities and counties in drafting ordinances that prioritize youth safety. Our goal is to ensure responsible regulations that protect communities from potential harms.
Sticker Shock Campaign
Through our Sticker Shock initiative, youth partner with local businesses to place warning stickers on alcohol products, reminding adults that supplying alcohol to minors is illegal and dangerous. This campaign raises awareness and reinforces responsible behavior.
